“iertutil.dll” is missing etc. etc.

I’ve had two cases in as many days with this issue; both Windows XP. Scanning the interwebs found more instances for this – It may relate to Internet Explorer 8 update/install etc.
It is relatively quick to fix – if you have the correct tools (LINUX boot disk, Min XP etc).
Also
“The iertutil.dll is not one of the 3498 files that are protected under Windows File Protection so it will not be replaced automatically if it comes up missing. This means that sfc /scannow will not help you.
It is also not on your XP installation CD for you to copy or expand.
You will have the same problem trying to boot into any kind of Safe Mode.
You will not be able to run any programs successfully on the computer.”

Hackers

I have noticed recently that there has been a lot of attempts to hack into my internet connection from looking at  the logs from my router.

Doing a search on these IP addresses all are in China and have multiple complaints.

It’s a timely reminder to make sure your router/internet security is setup properly – INCLUDING changing the default password!

As always – don’t hesitate to contact us if you require help or are uncertain regarding Internet Security.

The day the Cloud blew away!

The warm fuzzy feeling of “Cloud Services” took a hit the other day when the US government took down “Megaupload” web site arresting people in NZ.  Now it looks like innocent users are going to be caught up in this as all data uploaded may be deleted!

An update here.

I have been a bit hesitant to recommend Cloud services to clients “Out in the bush” due to several reasons (Poor internet connections,  Server outages [even Microsoft is susceptible]) and quite frankly I wouldn’t envy any businesses that are caught up in piracy issues like Meagaupload!

Food for thought.

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer

I had a client come across this error message while trying to click on a link in Outlook & wouldn’t open the webpage in IE.

It is a known issue - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310049

However by trying all methods, including “Microsoft Fix it” it still failed to resolve the problem!

To fix the issue I had to create the missing Registry Key “.html” and Default String “htmlfile”

WARNING: Be very careful -  serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly.

As usual – here at Waldon – we will be more than happy to resolve this problem, and any other issues that you may have, by either remote assistance or by an onsite visit.
