A little bit of maintenance can go a long way - we all need to consider how to keep our computers cool.  The main reason for a computer to overheat is due to all the fluff it sucks inside the case.

An extreme case - notice the missing fan blade at the back.

The best way is to unplug all cables from the computer except the power cord (Leave it turned off at the wall though) and open the case up (usually a few screws - do the left side - looking at the front of the tower to the back).  Check inside to see how dirty it is - DON'T use a vacuum cleaner (I've been told it can create static electricity!) - Use compressed air (in a can from a hardware store) with a fine nozzle to gently remove all dirt and fluff - carefully holding onto fan blades as the compressed air can cause the fan blades to spin too fast and damage the bearings.  Just make sure you don't dislodge any plugs or cables from the main board and other components like hard drives. Don't forget to do the power supply, video card and any heat sinks under fans as well.

MAKE SURE THE POWER IS TURNED OFF at the wall and BE CAREFUL of STATIC ELECTRICITY!

If using an air compressor in humid conditions - be aware of moisture in the compressed air!

Do this annually and you should have a cool computer!
